Mid-South Expansion

Mid-South Expansion

Williams’ Transco pipeline quietly, safely and reliably delivers natural gas to its customers through its 10,000-mile pipeline system, extending from South Texas to New York City. The Transco pipeline is a major transporter of natural gas in the southeast United States, delivering much of the natural gas consumed in this region.

Demand for natural gas in the southeastern U.S. is growing at a rate more than twice the national average, in large part due to the environmental advantages of natural gas over other fossil fuels. Much of this growth is fueled by the increasing demand for natural gas in electric power generation. Natural gas is the dominant fuel of choice for new electric power generation because it is efficient and cleaner burning. It is also used by existing power plants who convert from other fuels to natural gas to comply with clean air standards.

Williams has received customer requests to deliver additional natural gas supplies to the southeastern region beginning in the fall of 2012. To serve these customers, Williams has developed a two-phase proposal known as the Mid-South Expansion project, which would increase capacity on the existing Transco pipeline in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. By maximizing the use of our existing transmission corridor, our goal is to minimize the impact on property owners and the environment. Once complete, the Mid-South Expansion project would increase Transco’s natural gas delivery capacity by 225,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day.
