Leidy South

What is the Leidy South Project?

Despite producing record volumes of natural gas, the lack of current infrastructure in Pennsylvania causes a shortage in supply to many areas in the state. The Leidy South Project is a proposed expansion of existing energy infrastructure to further connect these areas to current natural gas supplies. In doing so, the project will help the existing Transco pipeline meet the daily energy needs of approximately 2.5 million homes. This expansion includes 5.9 miles of new pipeline and 2 new compressor stations.

How will the project benefit the community?

The project will create local jobs and boost the economy. The natural gas industry in Pennsylvania already supports more than 300,000 jobs and contributes more than $45 billion to the economy. According to estimates from third-party researchers, construction of the Leidy South Project’s compressor stations will contribute to this economic stimulus because it will:

The shift to cleaner-burning natural gas will benefit the environment as well. The Leidy South Project is currently in its review phase with the FERC and is expected to be completed in time for the 2021-22 winter heating season.

What is a compressor station? A compressor station is like the engine behind a natural pipeline. It provides energy to safely move the gas along its route. They are necessary to transport natural gas from its initial producing well to consumers.

Safety: Technicians are on site every day to monitor compressor stations and tests are conducted annually to certify that the station is up to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s safety standards.

Sound: Federal regulation requires that compressor stations have noise levels “comparable to noise generated by a refrigerator or normal indoor conversation” according to the Interstate Natural Gas Association of American (INGAA)[1]. Companies perform noise surveys during initial operation of the approved facilities and regularly report the results to FERC to document compliance.
